Blinds or curtains
Perhaps you are hesitating: blinds or curtains? It all depends on the windows of the room to be dressed. Blinds will appeal more to bathrooms and kitchens for maintenance reasons. Curtains and net curtains will satisfy the bedroom and living room. Nevertheless, the cohabitation of the two is not impossible. But back to our sheep because Westwing helps you choose your curtains here.
Measure your curtains correctly.
Take your centimetre to ensure that your curtains fall perfectly. Start by placing the rod. This must be at least 15 cm above the window and exceed 20 cm on each side. A trick to calculate the width of your curtains is to multiply the rod length by 1.5 or 2, depending on the number of wrinkles desired. Then measure the height from the floor to the rod. The curtains can skim the floor or, on the contrary, fall generously on it. In this case, add a few extra centimetres.
Materials for your winter curtains
In winter, the curtains, according to their texture, can literally warm up the atmosphere: some fabrics are excellent insulators. Then turn to velvet. This thick fabric is noble and gives a refined touch to interiors. Close-cropped velvet is popular with vintage and art deco atmospheres, and corduroy is preferred in interiors with pop accents.
Also timeless, the jacquard has the particularity of being woven. Therefore, the designs are neither printed nor embroidered, sometimes observed on both sides when the fabrics are reversible. These can take on all the patterns: graphics, florals, and stripes and slip into all decorative universes.
Elegant and robust, twill fabrics are easy to maintain. They are born from a particular weaving technique that can be made from natural or synthetic fibres. They offer as many creative possibilities as jacquard. These so-called heavy fabrics have occulting powers and protect against drafts. Also, place them on either side of the windows and in front of the front door to prevent wind from rushing into the gaps.
Materials for your summer curtains
Natural and light materials that protect from the summer sun are ideal for this season.
Cotton is perfect for summer curtains. This natural and versatile material integrates any interior thanks to various colours and textures.
Linen will give freshness to a country or Scandi style. Natural, its slightly coarse texture brings a rustic charm. This dense fabric will effectively protect you from the sun’s rays.
Net curtains are light and airy cotton or silk fabrics. If they don’t protect you from the sun, they elegantly decorate a window and bring a hint of romance. You can hang them alone or together with other curtains.
Silk is luxurious, it gives an interior a chic and glamorous touch. Fresh and sensual, silk offers excellent protection against the sun.
Which curtains for which room?
Grey Blackout curtains are recommended on bedroom windows, especially if these have no blinds or shutters. They can also be used as curtains for living rooms and rooms combined with curtains if your vis-à-vis is essential. For the kitchen, opt for thin and short curtains, and make sure they are easy to maintain. They will have a hard time escaping spills and other kitchen stains. Otherwise, opt for blinds.
What patterns and colours for curtains
Keep the curtains thick when it’s cold outside. Winter calls for sober colours. However, nothing should prevent you from experimenting with bright colours and patterns that you tend to go to more quickly in the summer if you feel like it. Beautiful crushed velvet curtains with showy flowers are sure to boost a somewhat dull decor; tartan curtains necessarily shift it. Finally, remember the only rule that applies: patterns or bright colours must harmonize with the walls and furniture. The perfect background for summer curtains will be a white or neutral wall. Patterned wallpaper combined with curtains of different designs could unnecessarily overload the room.

Curtains: what decoration trends
Your curtains should be beautiful but also cool and trendy in all seasons. Keep up with the latest trends to inspire you and create your style.
Brightly coloured curtains brighten up the space in the blink of an eye. Opt for shades like mint green, purple, parma, turquoise, blue or lemon yellow. They enhance classic atmospheres. Be sure to distribute a few touches of the chosen colour on the walls and on various accessories or furniture: cushions, plaids, armchairs, candlesticks and nuance to harmonize everything.
Retro Universe: favour geometric and futuristic prints in colours typical of the vintage look.
Eco-Trend: fall for natural materials and floral motifs.
Animal prints. We love when leopards, cows, and zebras mingle with the decor.
